The Politics of In-Difference:  A Project Within Early Eighteenth-Century English and American Periodicals

 The period between the Glorious Revolution and the end of Queen Anne’s reign was a time of tussle and conflict between political parties; and although at the beginning of the eighteenth century a two-party system was not yet fully visible on an ideological level, the Whigs and Tories were, nevertheless, becoming the two most politically influential factions. This rivalry defined the political situation in early eighteenth-century Britain and laid the foundation for the development of the ministerial machine of propaganda, the express purpose of which was to discredit opponents and justify the policies of the government. Methodically developed, the system was well applied during Oxford’s Ministry (1710-14). This presentation sets out to trace the evolving rhetoric of in-difference in early eighteenth-century English essay periodicals and attempts to reveal the way they became a model for the early American essay periodical.

 

Biographical note

 Katarzyna Kozak, Ph D., works the Department of English Culture and Literature Studies at Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, Poland. Her main areas of interest are connected with the interdisciplinary research lying between literature and politics concerning the process of shaping literary circles and their role in ideological formation of the society in early modern period. This comprises the research on the 18th century English fiction and non-fiction, mainly essay periodicals, and the language of propaganda. Other research interests include the relationship between the journalism and the emergence of the English novel. She is the author of a number of articles concerning her field of interest. She is currently working on a book on rhetoric of passions and reason in early 18th English periodical essays.
