A continuació oferim un resum de la conferència en anglès:

The proposed workshop focuses on late-Victorian and early modernist womentravellers, travel writers and authors whose itineraries took them to ‘exotic’ terrains of the Middle East. The lecture– by introducing the specific historic and cultural contexts – will provide theoretical background to the analysed issues and phenomena, e.g. imperial exploration, colonial travel, intercultural dialogue and cultural exchange, as well as questions of Western mis/representations of the Middle East and discourses of power. The seminar and class discussion will concentrate on close-reading of selected writings by Bell, Sackville-West and also Virginia Woolf, and analysing excerpts of other texts of culture related to the authors or based upon their work.

The students will have the opportunity to participate in discussions of various aspects of travel, pursued by British women of various social backgrounds, professional occupations and personal sympathies, for whom travel has become a way of life and/or a threat to life, frequently at the same time. The course will be based upon the following primary texts (fragments): Gertrude Bell, Persian Pictures Vita Sackville-West, Passenger to Teheran Virginia Woolf, Orlando + excerpts from Werner Herzog’s feature film The Queen of the Desert (2015), Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum’s documentary Letters from Baghdad (2016), and Sally Potter’s Orlando (1992).

La persona de contacte és la Dra. Paloma Fresno (paloma.fresno@uib.es).
